Underlining the lyrics to mark the chord changes
Now that the content of your one-pager is ready, the last step is to mark the lyrics with the underline indicators to pinpoint when chord changes happen.
Before getting started, make sure you’re familiar with the basics of underlining, especially:
- the position of an underline
- when the same chord repeats over multiple measures
- chord changes within a bar
As a reminder, there are three scenarios to consider. The chord change could be:
- Precisely aligned with a syllable
- Between two syllables
- During the last syllable of the line, i.e. after it starts but before it ends
In the following sections, we will look at each scenario.

Since they rely on syllables, the basic oral unit in most languages, the following guidelines can be applied to almost every language 🌐
