How to read the chords a.k.a. notes
When a new section (e.g. [Chorus]) is defined, you will find next to it the associated chords to play during that section. Except when this section re-uses the chords of another section.
The chords are represented using the C-D-E-F-G-A-B Anglo-Saxon alphabetical musical notation for two reasons.
The fact that all notes are represented with one letter—as opposed to the Do-Ré-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si solfège notation—has two main advantages:
- It uses much less space overall
- It’s also easier to align the notes vertically
Note
The names for the following chords are always abbreviated:
| Chord | Example |
|---|---|
MAJ |
G#M7 means G#MAJ7 |
Sus |
F7s4 means F7sus4 |
Aug |
Ca9 means Caug9 |
